Interleaving Acid-Free Tissue & Paper

Interleaving is the process of separating items in a collection, especially photographs and documents that are stored together, in order to prevent them from damaging one another. Archivists rely on either buffered or unbuffered tissue since it offers the most economical option and doesn’t take up too much valuable storage space. Please read about benefits and disadvantages of Buffered vs. Unbuffered materials before selecting.

Photographers often prefer using glassine or other kinds of transparent paper because of the visibility it provides and attractive smooth finish.

Conservators might recommend specialty materials like Photo-Tex, L-2 Spider or Abaca Heavy Weight Tissue for interleaving specific collections. If you are working on a project involving valuable, rare and fragile photographic (or other) materials, it is always wise to consult a conservation professional.
